Tutor Hiring Information

Becoming a Tutor

Thank you for your interest in tutoring at SBCC. There are two types of tutors: General/Subject Area and Course-Specific.

General/Subject Area tutors work with a department or service and have prearranged tutoring hours. All students needing help in a specific subject or skill visit that tutor during their tutoring hours.

Course-Specific tutors work with a specific instructor and class. Instructors screen and select their tutors, the majority of which are former students of that class. These tutors only work with the students in that specific class.

If a department tutor supervisor or instructor wants to hire you, the next step would be to begin the process outlined below.

*Tutors will not be approved to work until the entire hiring process is complete.*

Hiring Process

Tutor hiring has closed for Fall 2024. We will begin to collect hiring forms for Spring 2025 positions on 11/15.

All tutors are screened and selected by instructors or tutor supervisors.

After being selected, all new and returning tutors will need to submit Tutor Hiring Forms. A new set of forms must be submitted for every semester of employment. These forms will get you started with the hiring process. Depending on your situation, you may need to complete additional paperwork with Human Resources. Expand the information below to learn how you can prepare for your specific hiring process.

Please note: You will not be cleared to begin working until an EPAF is completed (which means your position has been approved) and a time sheet is created.

Step 1: Please visit the Tutorial Center website to complete the Tutor Hiring Forms.

**In order to access the online form, you will first have to sign into your campus email, then open a new tab in the same web browser.**

Information you will need to complete the Tutor Hiring Forms  includes the following:

  •   SBCC username and password.
  •   SBCC K number.
  •   If you were selected to be a tutor for a specific course, you will need to have the course(s), the name of the instructor, and CRN(s).
  •   If you are a student, you will need to know the total number of units you are enrolled in at SBCC.

Step 2:  Prospective tutor completes employee documents through an online onboarding portal. Access to this portal is granted by Human Resources. The prospective tutor submits all paperwork to Human Resources (including a TB Assessment/Test and, if a non-student, a Live-Scan background check). Original identification documents will be required to complete the hiring paperwork. (Click on the button below to view a list of acceptable documents.)

Please note: Your identification documents must be presented to Human Resources in-person to comply with U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) guidelines.

Documents to bring to Human Resources

Once the hiring paperwork is completed, Human Resources processes the information submitted and approves the Electronic Personnel Action Form (EPAF) that creates the tutor's employment position. The tutor and their assigned timesheet supervisor are notified of approval through their Pipeline email. (Pipeline access is granted to those who do not have it once paperwork is complete.)

Step 3: New tutors will also need to register for Tutor Training. Training includes:

  • 8 hour non-credit tutor training class, Tutor Training Across the Disciplines. This is free pass/no pass class, and tutors will be paid for participating. Tutors will be contacted to register for this piece of training.
  • Tutor session tracking, including how to use our tutor tracking tools. (15 minute video)
  • Tutoring supervision and remote tutoring guidelines. (15 minute video)
  • Sexual Harassment Prevention Training. (1-2hrs)
  • Practical employee skills, including how to access your timesheet, how to share your schedule, and how to check your Zoom account license.

**Training is paid, which means that tutors cannot begin training until their positions are approved.
